Market manager Jim Coalwell and his wife Lois oversee the weekly Sunday Certified Farmers Market in El Dorado Hills Town Center. “Because elevations in the county vary from 765 to 6,200 feet above sea level, there are three growing climates,” Jim explained. “This allows for us to have a better selection of fruits and vegetables throughout the season.” The market has an inviting family atmosphere as vendors share their pride in their products and relate personal stories.
Dale White of Coloma Gold Honey tells how he moves his more than 600 hives from place to place; following the wild flowers. Dave Sanborn, working with his son Brett Pittman relates how his father, Ross R. Sanborn, developed the light yellow angelcot fruit he sells, as Brett’s daughters Dallas and Kylie offer samples. Strawberry Bob, growing berries for 22 years, brings red, ripe fruit to market and Papa Hank has organic blueberries from Diamond Springs. John and Stephanie Mahvi and 11 year old daughter Elizabeth had several bags of purchases. “We come to the market two to three times a month specifically for the strawberries which are the best…and for the Indian food,” John said. There’s much more than fruits and vegetables. Bob Day of Mad Dog Mesa Olive Oils offers tastes of extra virgin olive oils and educates visitors. “All of our trees came from France and Italy and we only use our own olives for the oils.” Charmaine Cushenbery sells fresh and smoked salmon that she or her son Brent Cushenbery have caught – creating an unbroken link from sea to market. Sharon Moorhead of Bedrock Emu Works explains that they use every part of the birds they raise, from feathers to oil. Nom Ly and Tom Thao sell colorful flowers. Raj Tandon of Spicegrills provides generous samples of Indian foods he and his wife prepare. “We love this market and we love Jim,” said Raj. “He is such an awesome person to work with. We don’t want to go anywhere else.”
