Team Folsom Hills Special Olympics is a non-profit organization, serving Folsom and El Dorado Hills, designed to provide athletes who have special needs with competition training in sports like basketball, bocce, softball, golf, powerlifting, bowling, track and field and swimming. On June 16th, eleven Team Folsom Hills members participated in a swim exhibition hosted by the El Dorado Hills Tasmanian Devils Swim Team.
Tom Sharp, event coordinator and Taz announcer, explained that Team Folsom Hills members took turns to showcase different swim techniques, including the breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle swimming, while Taz members, families and spectators cheered them on. Next, Taz swimmers, including 3 coaches and visitors from the Folsom Sea Otters Swim Team, swam an integrated relay with the Team Folsom Hills swimmers, alternating laps between teams.
The following weekend, Team Folsom Hills traveled to UC Davis to compete in the Northern California Special Olympic Summer Games. Team Folsom Hills is made up of about 150 members, up from only three when the team was established in 2004. Participation in the program is free to all athletes, with expenses paid by community donations and organized fundraising.
