More than 6,000 people attended the annual Historic Folsom Christmas Tree Lighting event on December 7th. It took six hours to decorate the 35-foot natural pine that came from Smith’s Tree Farm in Apple Hill. The decorations were applied while the tree was in a horizontal position, after which staff from the Folsom Railroad Museum lifted it into position in the center of the ice skating rink with the help of a crane.
Folsom’s Mayor Kerri Howell and Folsom City Council members attended the event, which Melissa Crowley from News10 emceed. Before the tree lighting, groups from Sutter Street Theatre and Phoenix Elementary School provided entertainment. Other activities included snow at the ice rink and on Sutter Street, a definite crowd pleaser in a town that never sees snow unless it comes from a machine. Train rides, face painting, and live music also provided fun for the whole family. Local girl group Sweet Addiction and musician Oscar Reynolds livened up the evening with some cool tunes and a little dancing in the streets. Santa Claus could be seen in his sleigh, which was set up across the street from Fat Rabbit and adjacent to the ice rink.
