More than 350 young people came to Folsom High School May 10 to get a head start on a possible track career once they move on to high school. Fourth and fifth graders from eleven elementary schools in Folsom participated in track and field events. This is a fun venue without the pressure of normal timed events. “We don’t narrow it down to the fastest person and we don’t time them. Everyone gets a ribbon,” said event coordinator Meredith Brown. “Some families can’t afford to sign their kids up for fancy leagues. This is just one evening; it’s free and the kids can come out and have a good time.” Included were the long jump, javelin throw, 75 meter hurdles, and running events of 100, 200 and 400 meters as well as a one mile run. They also held 4×100 meter and 4×400 meter relays. Brown expressed extreme gratitude for the volunteers saying that without them, they wouldn’t be able to run the event at all. She added that seeing the kids have such a great time and knowing that this kind of event can open the door for them once they get to high school makes this kind of meet gratifying for everyone.
