Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of few prevention-based organizations in the area. This means that they can’t qualify for grants or federal funding like other organizations that are intervention-based (treating a problem in progress). BBBS have to work hard for fundraising and do so with two major efforts per year, an Autumn Auction and a Bowling Tournament. This year’s Bowling Tournament took place at two locations on April 21st, in Pollock Pines and at Folsom Lake Bowl.
Judy Knapp, BBBS executive director reported that 22 teams between the two locations registered for the event and that funds raised totaled around $10,000. Bowlers competed for post game awards, some serious and some silly, and guests could try their luck at the raffle or other games that offered rewards for both the guests and the organization.
Judy explained that 100% of the funds raised will go back into the community effort of training and recruiting mentors, matching them to the right child, and providing support to families, children, and mentors once a match is in progress. BBBS also partner with local businesses and organizations to provide activities for bigs and littles to do together.
