How did Folsom Lake beat the summer heat on the first weekend of June? The answer was simple: roaring engines, speeding boats, and a party that lasted all weekend long! With A crowd of more than 18,000, Big Wake Weekend was the region’s summer highlight of the year.
Billed as “California’s Premier Beach Picnic & Party Combining Culture, Sport & Entertainment,” the event featured water speedsters like the H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes, the Hyperlite Experience; wakeboarding exhibitions and the American Power Boat Association championship race series.
The weekend gave fans the opportunity to see exciting tricks, daring exhibitions, themed beer gardens, awesome food, and a variety of concessions side-by-side with Nationwide Insurance’s Motorsports Midway that entertained all ages. Promoter Bob Richards of 41 Live attributes the success to the positive support from the media and the community. “We are thankful for the fans, community and the media…they were nothing short of incredible. Everybody was there – newspapers, news; various folks from the press showed continued support to our event.”
Special thanks to California State Parks personnel: Laura Dennis, Richard Preston and Barry Smith. Local business support came from Roseville Automall, Saladine Construction, and Toyota. In addition, the Big Wake Weekend supported Disabled Sports USA, raising money and awareness for the charity. As for next year, Mr. Richards is eager to bring back water sports to the area. “The economic impact to the area was incredible. Many of our attendees called and said how fun it was.
Stores and businesses were excited, and Placer and Folsom bureaus of tourism reported great numbers of turnout as well. From hotels, to stores, we were excited to bring business to the area.”
