The 52 Club held a celebration and fundraiser to honor the Big Hill Helitack’s 50th Anniversary and recognize the crews who have served on the front lines fighting area wildfires. Members of the 52 Club set out on a 52-mile, two-day hike from Pollock Pines, along the railroad tracks and ended at El Dorado Hills Town Center on May 20th. Hiking participants made it back around 2:30 pm on Sunday and walked into Town Center behind the local Color Guard. The fire department brought in several fire engines, a fire prevention trailer and Smokey the Bear to entertain the crowd.
The event included a “Fill the Boot” effort for which local area firefighters collected donations for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which provides vital financial and emotional assistance to families of wildland firefighters who die or are seriously injured in the line of duty.
The Foundation seeks to bridge the gap created from the time it takes for most families to rebuild their lives after such a tragedy, by granting monies directly to a firefighter’s family to help make ends meet before other monetary assistance can be attained.
