Aerojet Memorial Day Run Supports Wounded Vets
Date: May 27, 2013
Location: Folsom Parkway Trails
Residents Involved: Matt Coss, David Perekopskiy & Sophie Coss. Ethan, Salem, Katelyn & Mari.
After Army Sergeant Adam Keyes was severely wounded in Afghanistan in 2010, his sister, Courtney Hvostal witnessed the work of the Wounded Warrior Project. Wanting to give back to the organization, she started the Memorial Day Wounded Veteran Run in 2011 in Folsom. Aerojet was looking for a way to serve vets in the local community, so in 2012 they teamed with Courtney to become the title sponsor for the run.
This year, 1655 runners participated in a kids fun run, 3K, 5K and 10K run. Aerojet employee and Air Force reservist Kevin Gilles led the kids fun run. Each child received a dog tag presented by a member of the Armed Forces.
Rick Cunningham emceed the event. Congressman Ami Bera’s office presented Courtney with a flag that had been flown over the Capital in honor of the event and Governor Brown’s office presented a proclamation. SAFE Credit Union, Old Navy, and Grocery Outlet provided volunteers or sponsored water stations. Top overall winners in the 5K were Brianna Thompson (women’s) and Matt Coss (men’s). Winning the 10K were Robin Pomeroy (women’s) and Kevin Taddonio (men’s). More than 65 volunteers helped with the event that raised more than $47,000 for the charity.
